What do you think is the most valuable thing in your life? Is it your family, friends? Your memories? Your values? Your kindness? Your health?
While all of these are valuable to us, they’re not the most important. We could live without all of them, though it might be painful.
The most important asset you have in your life is your consciousness. In fact, it’s your only asset. If you’re not conscious, does it matter if you have anything else? What good is a limp body trying to interact with friends?
Our consciousness is our treasure. It is our God-consciousness, the Thinker behind our thoughts.
“What you think you become.” –Buddha
Your attention, your consciousness is more valuable than your money. (Why do you think we pay attention?)
Not only is our consciousness our most valuable asset, it is what we use to create everything else we see around us.
“Since everything is a reflection of our minds, everything can be changed by our minds.” ~ Buddha
Our consciousness is our “beam” of attention. What we pay attention to receives the super-charged power of that beam- and will grow accordingly.
Is it any wonder some of us don’t accomplish what we want, when our “beams” of attention are so scattered over so many things?
What do you think is the benefit of focusing our attention on the past? How about the future? Our attention was created for, and benefits us, only in the present. When we turn it backwards to the past or try to shine it into a future that doesn’t exist yet, we waste the precious energy of our consciousness.
“Consciousness is the vessel. The events in one’s life are merely the physical or mental manifestations of the vessel’s contents.” -Hua-Ching Ni
Your attention creates everything in your life.
“I am responsible for what I see. I choose the feelings I experience, and I decide upon the goal I would achieve.” – A Course in Miracles
- What you think affects how you feel. If we think we’ve been treated unjustly, we give ourselves permission to feel hurt and anger. If we think something shouldn’t have happened, we give ourselves emotions of frustration, grief, unhappiness. Conversely, if we think that everything happens perfectly, we allow acceptance and gratitude to dominate our feelings. If we believe that everything is brimming with Love, we feel peace.
- What you think affects what you see around you. If you believe the world is a scary place, you will see evidence of this everywhere. If you believe the world is friendly and people are easy to get along with, you’ll see that everywhere. Not only is this simply the result of what we notice, but our thoughts actually change the world around us. Scientists at the Institute of HeartMath have proven that the heart waves in one person actually affect the brainwaves in those around them. Further research indicates even inanimate things like water and food is so strongly affected by our thoughts that it can be measured! We know this on a spiritual level, and science is proving it over and over in the physical realm.
“Throughout the day, at any time you think of it and have a quiet moment for reflection, tell yourself again the kind of day you want; the feelings you would have, the things you want to happen to you, and the things you would experience, and say: If I make no decisions by myself, this is the day that will be given me.“ – A Course in Miracles
- What you spend time looking at now affects what you’ll think about later. We “train” ourselves to think a certain way- and what we do and think now will certainly affect how we think and act later unless we’re conscious. I used to think I was stuck in my old patterns, the thinking my family taught me, the self-destructive acts… and then I became powerfully mindful. I realized that at any given moment I decide how I think and act. And when I set an intention, such as, “I embody love. All my actions and thoughts are of unconditional love,” my life changed. The more I allowed this practice to flow through me, the more I built that foundation for future loving thoughts and actions. Yet- I still get to choose every moment. Laying a foundation of love now just makes it easier to choose love later.
Given this incredible power, what do you want to think about?
